The Expert Group on Beyond GDP has published its final report, presented to UN Member States on 7 May 2026.

The Group was appointed by the Secretary-General following a request by UN Member States.

In their report, the Experts make concrete recommendations on how to move Beyond GDP: a conceptual framework; an indicator dashboard; and recommendations on how to implement this agenda on the statistical and policy side.

Why is the report needed?

The world is facing a paradox: despite decades of positive economic growth as reflected in rising Gross Domestic Product (GDP), many people report dissatisfaction with economic and political systems, and the planet is experiencing mounting crises. There is a clear dissonance between what GDP measures and what people value, and this dissonance has become particularly acute over the last decade. The clear implication: The world needs to move Beyond GDP - now.

Key messages:

  • GDP shows what we produce. It doesn't show what we value.
  • Better decisions require better measures. The Beyond GDP dashboard provides them, and we can start using it now.
  • We now have a practical blueprint to measure regularly what truly drives well-being for people and planet.
  • Delay in adopting better measures of progress is no longer an option. The cost is borne today and by future generations.
