Description
We have noticed a large degree of variation in the practice of TIVA syringe reuse during the same patient’s anaesthetic and think that a national survey could potentially lead to a large reduction in TIVA syringe use by a) informing anaesthetists of their peers’ current syringe reuse practice and by b) supporting research into any microbial or stiction implications of TIVA syringe refilling.
There is very little current evidence and the eventual goal would be for this research to lead to guidelines/consensus statement on the safe and prudent refilling of TIVA syringes. An earlier version of this survey at our small DGH suggested that we could save ~35,000 50ml syringes per year if same-patient TIVA syringe reuse was safely enabled.
