From exposure to toxic contaminants in local communities to the widespread impacts of armed conflict on populations and ecosystems, the harms of war can persist long after hostilities end. In this webinar, environmental epidemiologist Dr. Amira Aker and physician and public health expert Dr. Barry S. Levy will examine environmental health risks and community impacts of war, as well as the lasting effects on future generations. Vi Waghiyi and Pamela Miller of Alaska Community Action on Toxics (ACAT) will share their knowledge and experience of more than 25 years of community-based research investigating long-term harm caused by the military occupation of Sivuqaq (St. Lawrence Island). The speakers will explore opportunities to ensure environmental justice, prevent environmental harm, and advance health protection at local, national, and international levels.
