Five years of a greener NHS: progress and forward look

In September 2025 NHS England published its five years of a greener NHS progress report with next steps and an updated carbon footprint assessment, based on a new and improved methodology. 

Thanks to the dedication of NHS staff, direct emissions are down 68% since 1990 and 14% in the last five years, keeping the NHS on track to meet our 2032 and 2040 goals. 

Greener care means cleaner air, reduced costs, improved health, and more resilient services for patients today and generations to come.
