Nourishing the Health of Patients and the Climate: Boston Medical Center's Sustainable Food Program

In her climate and food justice work, pediatric gastroenterologist Dr. Margot Tang is the Value-Based Procurement and Sustainability Lead for "Nourishing Our Community," an initiative at Boston Medical Center (BMC) to align patient health and planetary health goals. From its rooftop farms to its preventative food pantry, BMC is a recognized leader in addressing at-risk local food systems while also reducing its carbon footprint and increasing green space. 

Dr. Tang serves as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Boston University School of Medicine, and she is an Attending Physician in Pediatric Gastroenterology at both BMC and Boston Children’s Hospital. Related to her climate and food justice work, she is a member of the National Academy of Medicine’s Climate Communities Network as well as a member of the physician activist group Climate Code Blue.

Dr. Tang earned her Medical Degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and a Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. She completed her residency through the Boston Combined Residency in Pediatrics and her fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at Boston Children’s Hospital.
