Fostering human health through ocean sustainability in the 21st century
Description
This peer-reviewed perspective article examines the interconnected relationships between ocean health, human health and wellbeing. It argues that understanding these relationships requires moving beyond a focus on environmental hazards to recognise the benefits that healthy marine ecosystems provide.
The authors consider threats including pollution, overfishing, climate change and habitat degradation, alongside the ocean's contributions to nutrition, livelihoods, renewable energy and physical and mental wellbeing. They highlight how access to healthy coastal and marine environments can support health, including among socioeconomically disadvantaged communities.
The article advocates a more integrated approach to ocean management that recognises both the risks and benefits arising from human interactions with marine ecosystems. It emphasises the importance of developing a shared vision for ocean sustainability, supported by research, policy and management approaches that protect marine ecosystems while promoting human health.
