Description

The assessment finds that global biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse are significant national security threats for the UK. It warns that ongoing degradation of critical ecosystems — like rainforests, boreal forests, the Himalayas, coral reefs and mangroves — undermines the natural systems that provide food, water, climate stability and economic resilience. Without major intervention, these trends are likely to continue to 2050 and beyond, increasing risks of food and water insecurity, natural disasters, geopolitical instability, migration and conflict. Protecting and restoring ecosystems is vital to building long-term national security and prosperity.
