Nature and Healthcare

This free online educational module explores the relationship between nature, human health and healthcare, examining how environmental degradation affects population wellbeing and health inequalities. Developed collaboratively by the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, Healthcare Ocean and RSK, it considers the healthcare sector's dependence on healthy ecosystems and its contribution to nature loss.

The module introduces the concept of a nature footprint and examines how healthcare activities affect biodiversity and natural systems. It explores inequalities arising from differences in access to nature and exposure to environmental degradation, alongside opportunities for healthcare professionals and organisations to support ecological recovery.

Participants are introduced to a practical three-part framework for action: reducing healthcare's nature footprint, restoring nature and rebuilding connections between people and the natural environment. The module encourages consideration of how these approaches can be incorporated into healthcare practice and organisational sustainability initiatives.
