As extreme heat becomes more frequent and severe with climate change, online communities are emerging as important sources of practical advice, shared experiences and support. This study examined 150 popular posts from a Reddit community dedicated to heat preparedness, alongside survey responses from 77 verified participants.

The findings revealed how individuals exchange practical cooling strategies, discuss the physical and psychological impacts of heat, and develop low-cost adaptations suited to their circumstances. Participants frequently described challenges inadequately addressed by conventional public health advice, including unaffordable cooling, unsuitable housing, disability and disrupted sleep.

Among surveyed participants, 84% identified Reddit as their preferred source of heat-related information, highlighting the appeal of accessible, interactive and experience-based communication.

The researchers suggest that online communities could complement established public health systems by identifying unmet needs, supporting community-led adaptation and informing more relevant heat-health guidance.

However, the study involved a relatively small, self-selected sample, and the safety and effectiveness of community-generated advice were not independently assessed. The findings highlight opportunities for public health organisations to engage with online communities while ensuring that information remains evidence-based.
