Carbon net zero sustainability action plan
Clinical impacts and solutions
The General Pharmaceutical Council's Carbon Net Zero Action Plan, aiming to achieve carbon net zero by 2040. The plan outlines our commitment to sustainable pharmacy regulation and acknowledges climate change as the most significant threat to public health. Climate change not only poses direct health risks but also exacerbates existing health inequalities, impacting patients, the public, and health services alike.

Description
Our (the GPhC) Carbon Net Zero Action Plan is structured around three core elements:
1. Putting our own house in order
We are committed to reducing our own carbon footprint and embedding sustainability into our operations. By ‘putting our own house in order’, we aim to set a standard for others to follow in the healthcare sector.
2. Greening our regulatory levers
We are embedding environmental sustainability into our regulatory framework, ensuring a ‘green thread’ runs through our approach. This initiative will encourage pharmacies and registrants to adopt sustainable practices, which directly enhances patient care and promotes overall health and wellbeing.
3. Collaborative efforts for sustainable pharmacy care
We will leverage our regulatory influence and collaborative networks to foster smarter, more efficient practices across the sector. By working together, we can accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices, enhance value, and maximise the impact of our efforts.
Through these initiatives, our focus is to lead the way in fostering a more sustainable future for pharmacy care.
