Air pollution does not stop at borders. It can travel thousands of kilometres, crossing continents and oceans and affecting air quality far from its source.

The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) provides up-to-date information on the spatial distribution and movement of atmospheric pollutants around the world. Through open data, forecasts and analyses, CAMS supports public information, scientific research and policymaking.

This year, I am pleased to introduce CAMS Atmosphere Watch, a new publication in the CAMS family of products offering an overview of key topics in air quality and atmospheric composition. In its first edition, we focus on three main stories: ground-level ozone, wildfire smoke and dust.

Often described as an “invisible killer” by the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution has adverse impacts on public health. To address this invisible threat, CAMS forecasts, tracks and analyses air pollution episodes around the world.

This year’s intense heat, major fires and episodes of long-range dust transport have already affected millions, while highlighting the close connection between atmospheric composition, weather and climate.
