Description

The skills required to perform IONM are highly specialised with those trained in short supply forcing many NHS organisations to outsource neuromonitoring services at significant cost.

This unique to the UK programme delivered in collaboration with US-based education and training specialists at the Center for Electroneurodiagnostics (CEN) enables NHS organisations to provide their own neuromonitoring service and reduce costs.

Course structure

Theory: includes seven weeks of didactic teaching concluding with a formal assessment.

Practical:  attendance in Newcastle for simulation training followed by two weeks of hands-on experience involving 4-6 spinal deformity cases.

Mentorship:  requirement to complete around 50 supervised cases in local workplace within nine months including monthly sessions scheduled with mentor to review progress and conduct workplace assessments.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course, delegates will have:

  • learned the skills and knowledge required for delivering IONM services;
  • understood surgeries requiring IONM and the different IONM modalities;
  • set up neuromonitoring equipment and prepared patients for IONM;
  • experienced using IONM during both simulated scenarios and live surgical procedures;
  • participated in clinical situations involving complex decision making.

The typical duration to complete all requirements is around nine months.

On successful completion we award the “Certificate of intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (focus on spinal deformity).”

Courses typically run January, April and September.
