Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)

Information

We're one of the world’s fastest-growing voluntary corporate climate initiatives, trusted by over 11,000 companies and financial institutions worldwide.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is registered as a charity in England and Wales, and has a subsidiary, SBTi Services Limited, which delivers target validation services. We were initially founded as a collaboration between CDP, United Nations Global Compact, We Mean Business Coalition, World Resources Institute (WRI), and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

We develop the standards, tools, and guidance which enable companies and financial institutions worldwide to take credible, science-based climate action. Our resources are free for any organization to use via our website; companies and financial institutions that use them to set greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets can then have these targets validated through SBTi Services. Companies with validated targets, or which have committed to set them, are listed on our Target Dashboard

Standards, Tools & Guidance: Clear frameworks for setting near-term and net-zero targets, from our flagship Corporate Net-Zero Standard and Financial Institutions Net-Zero Standard to specialized guidance and sector standards for high-impact industries including forestry, land and agriculture (FLAG), buildings, steel, and cement.

Validation Services: Robust verification through SBTi Services, giving stakeholders confidence in targets that clearly lay out by how much and how fast businesses need to decarbonize. Our methodologies and resources are developed following a robust process, ensuring continuous improvement aligned with evolving climate science and business practices.

Setting science-based targets is entirely voluntary, allowing companies to demonstrate leadership, manage risks, and capitalize on net-zero opportunities.
