The UK Parliament website has a substantial sustainability programme and presents sustainability as an operational priority rather than simply a statement of intent. It has a formal Environmental Sustainability Policy covering both Houses of Parliament and the Parliamentary Digital Service.
Key sustainability commitments
Parliament states that it will:
- Achieve net-zero carbon emissions across the Parliamentary Estate.
- Integrate circular economy principles into its operations.
- Reduce the environmental impact of its supply chain.
- Eliminate or minimise single-use plastics, packaging and paper.
- Procure from environmentally responsible suppliers.
- Reduce waste and maintain zero waste to landfill from normal business activities.
- Promote sustainable travel.
- Improve biopersity across the Parliamentary Estate.
- Incorporate sustainability into refurbishment and construction projects.
Long-term targets to 2050
Parliament has adopted targets including:
- Net Zero Carbon for Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
- 50% reduction in energy use.
- 75% reduction in mains water consumption.
- 70% reduction in borehole water use.
- 90% recycling performance.
- Circular economy requirements throughout its supplier network.
- Significant biopersity improvements across the Estate.
